Christmas in Trinidad

Posted by

Here we are again, another year, another Christmas. One of the best (in my opinion) times of the year.

Remembering all the traditions of childhood, and trying to keep them going for our future generations. Yes, Christmas is a time of giving, joy, peace and most of all, in celebration of Jesus Christ...but we all know what traditions I'm talking about. The Carols, the Parang (Soca Santa, Anita, these songs are our "White Christmas"), the painting, putting up lights, decorations etc.

I know it doesn't "feel" like Christmas until you start to transform your home in preparation of the day. Painting the front steps red, painting the inside, buying new curtains, sheets, table cloths etc.

Food..such a HUGE part of our Trinbago Christmas.Living away from home, you really miss the togetherness of all the prep that takes place weeks before this joyous occasion.

I remember weeks before Christmas, helping my grandmother make black cake, and being very upset when she didn't "leave enough in the bowl for me to lick". These seemingly minuscule events are what being to shape family bonding, and develop the cultural traditions we all love and look forward to. I am sure everyone cannot wait to smell that ham and bread baking in the oven, oh and never forget stealing a little piece when mummy not looking. (Even picking at the food is a tradition *smile*) Who can forget the pastel making, that is a event that the entire family is a part of, everyone gets a task...and again...picking at the meat as you fill each one, before they are wrapped.

Believe me I can go on and on about all the food...Sorrel, Ponche-de-Creme...but I won't.

To wrap up, have a very Merry Christmas, remember the reason for the season. Cheers.
